From Messel via Würzburg to BambergTravelling from Messel to Bamberg the tour starts at Messel lying at the eastern flank of the Rhine valley, east of Darmstadt and south of Frankfurt. Featuring the Messel Pit with its extraordinary and unique 47 million years old mammalian skeleton treasure, safeguarded within the oilshale deposit of the former maar crater, the tour traverses the Odenwald and Spessart mountains, two exceptionally beautiful holiday regions in Germany, towards the baroque episcopal residence of Würzburg.Besides the golden baroque of the Residenz Palace, the former palace of the prince-bishops, the town has plenty to offer. No tour of the region would be complete without a visit to one of the many rustic wine bars which bear witness to the tradition of Franconian wine, or without sampling the fine Franconian cuisine. The final stage of this route leads through the Steigerwald nature reserve to Bamberg, where Franconian hospitality is just as much a part of the romantic atmosphere of the town as the many bridges and waterways. And with a bit of luck you will be just in time to catch a performance by the renowned Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in the Concert and Congress Hall. |
