Dresden

Elbe Valley
UNESCO-World-Heritage since 2004

The Dresden Elbe Valley with its harmonious combination of nature and urban architecture was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 under the category of developing cultural
landscapes.

Dresden is characterised by the unity of its historical city centre, garden suburbs and unique natural landscape. Augustus the Strong pursued the idea of turning the Elbe into a “Canale Grande” at the heart of the city and the countryside.

This tradition of baroque court culture has been maintained, elaborated upon and handed down through the generations in the area stretching from Pillnitz Palace in the east to Übigau Palace in the west. The Church of Our Lady, Zwinger Palace and Semper Opera House are the most striking landmarks of this city on the Elbe which holds so much more in store for visitors.
