Bad Painting -good art

The exhibition considers the subject of “bad painting”, that is, superficially “bad”
painting that defies the normative aspect of the medium and is, at one and the
same time, a critique and motor that repeatedly delivers new points of departure
for the medium. The show will provide an episodic guide through the 20th century
and will present important positions from Picabia and Polke and on up to the present.
Beginning with the work of Rudolf Bauer—a Kandinsky imitator from the circles of
the “Sturm”—there are various contributions from the Twenties and Thirties, Art Brut and the Cobra group that give the tone to the first part of the exhibition.
