SAMSON AND DELILAH - A RUBENS PAINTING RETURNS

Peter Paul Rubens executed the painting Samson and Delilah for his patron, the burgomaster Nicolaas Rockox, shortly after returning from Italy in 1608. The showpiece of the latter's collection, this masterpiece was executed specially to hang over the fireplace in his Great Parlour, constituting the focal point of interest in the most prominent place of this patrician residence. From 1700 to its sale in 1880 this painting was part of the Rubens collection of the Princes von Liechtenstein. It is also recorded in the painting of Rockox’s gallery by Frans Francken II which is today in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Opening at the Rockoxhuis in Antwerp to mark its 30th anniversary before transferring to the LIECHTENSTEIN MUSEUM, the exhibition entitled SAMSON AND DELILAH. A Rubens painting returns takes these two paintings as the occasion to bring back other important works of art from Rockox’s collection to his residence, illustrating his role in the artistic life of early 17th-century Antwerp.
