Oskar Strnad 1979-1935. Architecture Theatre Housing

Oskar Strnad was one of the most important architects, stage set designers and theoreticians among the Viennese Modernists. The Strnad exhibition, the first since the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1979, makes good a major omissionin the study of the Viennese Modernists. Together with Josef Frank, Strnad founded a Vienna School that distanced itself from the aestheticism of the Wiener Werkstätte, taking an undogmatic
approach similar to that of Adolf Loos. Like most Loos students, the founders and first successors of the Vienna School were of Jewish origin. Strnad built a number of villas, including the vast Kranz country house in Raach ob Gloggnitz and the house of the writer Jakob Wassermann, which are documented in detail.
