Sergej Jensen - Henrik Olesen

Artists Sergej Jensen (b. 1973 in Maglegaard/Denmark, currently living in Berlin) and Henrik Olesen (b. 1967 in Esbjerg/Denmark, also living in Berlin) for the first time are collaborating on a space for the Pinakothek der Moderne which combines painting (Jensen) and sculpture (Olesen).

In this encounter, the focus of their works is largely on the non-colours black and white which characterise the look of Modernist art. On closer inspection irregularities and seemingly erroneous details become visible – details that are in stark contrast to the flawlessness of an aspired perfection. On an aesthetic level, a dialogue is sought with those elders in the history of art, whose uncontested, authoritative position presents a major and ambivalent challenge.

For his paintings Sergej Jensen uses a wide variety of media (bleaching agent, acrylic or batik ink), which he applies to various supports such as coarse burlap, shimmering silk fabric or simple cotton. Often he adds patches of canvas, strips or material applications and consciously integrates seams, creases, stains, bleach residue and other traces of wear-and-tear as pictorial elements.
Jensen’s equally laconic and radical treatment of painting plays with the strict boundaries between autonomous art production and textile design, scratches at the unbending codification of certain artistic processes and poses questions about originality and authorship.

Henrik Olesen concerns himself with establishing and examining sexual, cultural and political identities. His extensive research into the history of architecture, industry, politics and legal practices exposes the manipulative mechanisms and hierarchical relationships in which the majority conditions the social rules of communal life and suppresses alternative attitudes. Sculptures and installations, whose abbreviated style is in the tradition of Minimal and Conceptual Art, are the result.
