ULRICH LOTH. A GERMAN PAINTER BETWEEN CARAVAGGIO AND RUBENS

Ulrich Loth (around 1600 – before 1663) was after Peter Candid the most important Munich painter of the 17th century. As a pupil of Candid he assisted in the painting of the Residenz Palace during the reign of Elector Maximilian I. of Bavaria. This enabled the artist to undertake a four-year journey to Italy. Once back at the Court in Munich, Loth put into practice ideas gained from his impressions of Italian art and became one of Caravaggio’s leading successors in Germany. Later works point to a discourse with the highly Baroque imagery of Peter Paul Rubens. Half-length paintings, altarpieces in important Munich churches, depictions of historical scenes in the Old Palace (Altes Schloss) in Schleißheim and devotional pictures are all part of the wide spectrum covered by Loth’s oeuvre. From the historical point of view, his painting can be seen as an artistic expression of the Counter-Reformation sentiments espoused by Maximilian I.
The exhibition traces for the first time the development of this unusual German artist and presents the full range of his work. This first monographic show is accompanied by a catalogue with a comprehensive table of contents. It thus makes a valuable contribution to research into this often neglected area of German painting at the time of the Thirty Years War.

descripción del Museo

14th to 18th Century European Painting

The Alte Pinakothek houses one of the world´s most important collections. On display are more than 800 paintings, among them numerous well-known masterpieces of 14th to 18th Century European painting.

An exquisite collection of early Dutch painting including works by Rogier van der Weyden and Dieric Bouts can be found in close proximity to early German painting. This section includes Albrecht Dürer´s famous “Self Portrait” of 1500 and his “Four Apostles,” as well as masterpieces by Michael Pacher, Albert Altdorfer und Lucas Cranach. The scope and quality of Munich 's Flemish art collection, which includes works by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordeans, makes it unique. The museums holdings also include the “Canigani Holy Family,” which was the first painting by Raphael to be brought to Germany . The Alte Pinakothek also boasts masterpieces by Titian and Tintoretto, Rembrandt and Frans Hals, Murillo and Velasquez, Chardin and Boucher.

This superb and extensive collection makes it possible to explore the development of painting from the Middle Ages through to the end of the Rococo era. This art historical path is then continued through the 19th century with works displayed in the Neue Pinakothek and into the 20th century and contemporary times with works displayed in the Pinakothek der Moderne.

The Alte Pinakothek owns the most extensive collection of old German painting (ex. Stefan Lochner, Albrecht Dürer, Albrecht Altdorfer, Cranach, Holbein, Matthias Grünewald, Michael Pacher, Hans von Aachen, Adam Elsheimer).
