Since 1929 the GRASSI Museum has served as the residence of Leipzig's ethnological museum which it shares with the Museum of Applied Arts and the Museum of Musical Instruments. Due to extensive renovation of the building premises, all three museums closed their exhibitions in 2000. On June 14, 2005 the renovated building was handed back into the hands of the museums . Step by step, they are now moving back into the building.
The new permanent exhibition of the Museum fuer Voelkerkunde zu Leipzig, under the motto "Trips Around One World" starts in Asia and from there covers the regions of Europe and the Middle East. It continues with the Orient on the second floor, leading the way through Sub-Saharan Africa, America, Oceania, and Australia. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum presents a variety of different exhibitions and numerous events for children and adults alike.
