On The Spot #4 - Mika Taanila

For the fourth edition of the exhibition series 'On The Spot' we present the Finnish filmmaker Mika Taanila with a first institutional solo exhibition in Germany. For 'On The Spot #4', the artist shows some of his older works along with a new short film in the Lichthof of the Kunstverein. Taanila's films are situated between the genres of documentary and fictional film, and he realizes them with found historical material, experimental approaches or scenes that he films himself. All his works bear witness to his passionate interest for visions of the future and technical utopias in the areas of architecture, design and electronic music. The special appeal of his films lies in their ambivalent mixture of various contents oriented towards the future and a visual language which is often historical and almost nostalgic.

Taanila's films have already been shown in numerous international exhibitions such as the Istanbul Biennale, the berlin biennale or the Manifesta in Frankfurt. The widespread presence of his oeuvre is mostly concentrated on individual films, Mika Taanila's works, however, are to be interpreted in relation to each other and as the results of an investigative processe involving several media. Also the short film "Summer Trip," to be shown for the first time in the Kunstverein, is based on the film from 2002 "The Future Is Not What It Used To Be," a portrait of the pioneer of Finnish electronic music Erkki Kurenniemi. A further central focus of the exhibition is "Futuro - A New Stance for Tomorrow" (1998), which is certainly Taanila's best-known film and depicts the rise and fall of the Futuro House that was designed by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen as a vision of the nineteen-sixties.
