MATCH - Otto Dix and the Art of Portraying

Portraits are not only one of the central themes in the work of Otto Dix but are still a prominent theme in art works today. The preoccupation with oneself, the alternating play between seeing and being seen, and the search for identity, are an integral part of European culture. In this exhibition, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, which owns the most important collection of works by Otto Dix worldwide, will focus on Dix’s portraits for the first time in a large museum exhibition: the selection of works will high-light different types of portrait such as self portraits, portraits of children, honorable citizens, prominent persons and artists, the social portrait, and also aspects such as verismo and caricature, soul-searching, and stereotypes versus individuals.
