back to black - black in recent painting

Black has always been a challenge for painters, not only because of its symbolic meaning. The black square by Kasimir Malewitsch is an incunable of modernity. Black is the absence of colour. The perception itself is complex, because within black contrasts can hardly form. After the terrific exhibition of “Black Paintings” with Frank Stella, Ad Reinhard, Mark Rothko, amongst others in the “Haus der Kunst” in Munich, we present current contemporary artists who engage in the subject matter of black images.
