Brillant Enamel - For Franz Hartmann on his 100th Birthday

a small presentation of enamelwork by the Berlin painter and enamel artist

The Berlin painter and enamelwork artist Franz Hartmann (1907 - 1989) would have been 100 years old this year. Franz Hartmann won a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition of 1937 and held a professorship at the Meisterschule für Kunsthandwerk und Mode and the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst (both in Berlin) from 1951 to 1975. Painting and enamelwork are intimately interwoven in his free compositions. Besides these, Hartmann created enamelled tableware and jewellery. His heirs have donated a number of his works to the Museum, including a cutlery casket with enamelled decoration all the way round dating from 1929. We take this opportunity provided by the donation to commemorate the artist, and these works will be the centrepiece of a presentation in the vestibule to the Modern Gallery.
