Sea pieces. From Max Beckmann to Gerhard Richter

“Sea pieces. From Max Beckmann to Gerhard Richter” is a sequel to the exhibition “Sea pieces. From Caspar David Friedrich to Emil Nolde”, which was on show at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in summer 2005 and attracted more than 90,000 visitors. This continuation marks the next episode in the story of different artists' engagement with ships, harbours and the sea. It consistently explores new art historical territory, following the development of maritime themes from classical modernism to the international art of the present day.The more than 100 works on show will include not only painting, but also contemporary artistic forms of expression, such as installations, photographs and videos. Among them will be works by Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee, Max Ernst, Paul Nash, Nicolas de Stael, Andy Warhol, Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter.
