In honour of Bram van Velde

Born in Holland in 1895, Bram van Velde’s work is notable for its highly personal Expressionist style wherein powerful emotions, expressed through the use of colour, are regulated by inherent structural solidity. Over the course of his long career - he died in Grimaud in 1981 - he resided for extended periods of time in Geneva where he maintained close contacts with art circles. His generosity with regard to local institutions has left a long-lasting legacy. The City of Geneva has decided to give a new pedestrian path his name so as to commemorate these relations and keep their memory alive. The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire is participating in this event by presenting a portion of its large collection of his work on the occasion of the footpath’s inauguration on 19 October.

Erected between 1903 and 1910 and designed as an encyclopedic museum, it covers the whole of western culture, from its origins to the present days.

The three sectors of the museum comprise Archaeology (prehistoric, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman); Fine Arts (some 400 paintings from the Renaissance to modern times, and sculptures by artists such as Houdon, Pradier, Rodin, Arp, Giacometti, Tinguely, etc.); Applied Arts (objects from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, such as furniture, textiles, pewterware, arms and armor).
