20 abril 2007 – 15 julio 2007 Between Enlightenment and Sensibility: The English Children’s Portrait and Its Emulation in EuropeThe recently purchased painting The Children of Lord Cavendish by Sir Thomas Lawrence, a masterpiece in the Städel collection, provided the occasion for this exhibition on the evolution of the portrait of children in eighteenth-century England and its spread to the European continent. Beginning with the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, which were read throughout Europe, children were viewed as independent personalities for the first time, as the focus of both the care and pride of the family. Portraits of children in open landscapes unaccompanied by adults reflected this new view of childhood. The period covered spans from Sir Anthony van Dyck, who introduced a modern genre to England with his portraits of children, by way of Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, and Henry Raeburn to Friedrich von Amerling and Franz Xaver Winterhalter.Curator: Dr. Mirjam Neumeister direcciónStädel Museum / Städtische GalerieSchaumainkai 63 60596 Frankfurt am Main fon +49 69 605 09 80 http://www.staedelmuseum.de horariosTuesday, Friday-Sunday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., closed on Monday.descripción del Museo700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo. |
