Martin Kippenberger: Working until everything is set - Pictures 1984/85

In the immediate future the Städel Museum will receive an important work by Martin Kippenberger as a donation. Kippenberger is one of the towering figures in German art, and his oeuvre had a lasting influence on the generation of artists who succeeded him. The goal of the exhibition is to explore the multifarious levels of connotation in his complex art in a selection of painted works from 1984 and 1985. The artistic strategies of the deliberate break in style, provocation, and irony will be considered and new perspectives provided on the Städel Museum’s collection of prominent works of German art from the 1960s to 1980s.

700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo.
