Albrecht Dürer, Two Sisters: An Encounter in the Städel Museum

This exhibition is dedicated to a central work by Albrecht Dürer in the collection of the Städel Museum: Bildnis einer jungen Frau mit offenem Haar (Portrait of a Young Woman with Her Hair Down). For the first time in more than 150 years it will be shown together with Bildnis einer jungen Frau mit aufgestecktem Haar (Portrait of a Young Woman with Her Hair Pinned Up), from 1497, which belongs to the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. Along with the two historic copies also shown here, these two works have presented a mystery to Dürer scholars ever since their discovery. Until recently it was unclear which two of the four works were Dürer’s originals. Further questions surrounded the role and identity of the portrait’s subject. This exhibition and its catalog propose a new theory, drawing us into the realm of the master’s immediate family.

700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo.
