Cult Image. Altarpieces and Devotional Paintings from Duccio to Perugino

Early Italian painting by Duccio, the Lorenzettis, Simone Martini, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico influenced the path of the development of the modern panel painting far beyond Italy’s borders. The monumental altarpiece, intended for public spaces, and the small-format devotional painting, designed to be viewed close up and used by the owner for private, domestic devotional exercises, are the two poles of an evolution that resulted not only in an extremely lively exchange between the altarpiece and the devotional painting but also the emergence of all the pictorial genres that seem so natural to us today: the narrative painting, the portrait, the still life, and the landscape. The exhibition sketches this path from the cult image to the art image using examples from the Städel’s collection and numerous works lent from international collections.

700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo.
