Thomas Bayrle

Thomas Bayrle (*1937) will install his graphic oeuvre from the last forty years in the large gallery at Museum Ludwig. The majority of these works were produced between 1967 and 1972. Apart from a number of extra-large silkscreen prints on plastic, which the artist himself printed and joined together in Nutzen, some 60 silkscreen prints on paper will be on display.
Right from the start, Bayrle worked with photomontages and every conceivable method of reproduction. He built up traceries of ever-repeating visual elements that were of such complexity they could be used as the basic material to create “superforms”. Thus for instance a host of small beer glasses could be used to form one large beer glass, and hundreds of tiny telephones to make a portrait of a woman.

At the centre of the exhibition space will be a new sculpture entitled “Conveyor Belt”. It originates from the “Autobahn-Reliefs” that the artist made in the 1980s. For the exhibition Bayrle will translate a model from the recent past into an architectural dimension that keys in directly with the actual architecture of the location.
