Paula Modersohn-Becker and the egyptian mummy portraits. Hommage to her 100th death day

From 15 March until 15 June 2008 the Museum Ludwig presents portraits by Paula Modersohn-Becker and Egyptian mummy portraits side by side. Valuable, fragile likenesses of mummies from outstanding international collections will, for the first time, be shown in a museum dedicated to contemporary art and will shed a new light on the works of the North German artist.

When Paula Modersohn-Becker travels to Paris for the second time in 1903, she discovers antique mummy portraits in the Egyptian section of the Louvre, which are to exert a lifelong fascination upon her. Excitedly she records in her diary: “ Now I feel deeply what I can learn from the heads of Antiquity. How large they are and how simply portrayed. Forehead, eyes, mouth, nose, cheeks, chin, that is all. It sounds so simple and yet it is so very much.” She recognizes the closeness to her own paintings, in which she strives for a simplicity which is to appear as natural and artistic, as universal and modern as possible. In the mummy portraits she finds a model which has proved to be timelessly valid. The portraits are almost 2000 years old. They were created round 100 to 300 AD in the valley of Fayum. Thin wooden tablets were placed on the faces of the dead and bound into the mummy – and, at the end of the 19th century, unearthed by scientists and adventurers.
