State of Cinema: Photo workshop Hugo Schmölz

Karl Hugo Schmölz (1917 – 1986) was introduced to photography at a tender age by his father, the architectural photographer Hugo Schmölz. Already by 1930 he was beginning to take on commissions. When his father died in 1938, he directed the "Fotowerkstätte Hugo Schmölz" (Hugo Schmölz Photo Studio) without interruption until 1958. After the war he undertook a large-scale documentation of the new constructions built in the 1950s – from industrial edifices to prestige architecture to public buildings. Among his commissions was a series on the cinemas in 1950s North Rhine Westphalia. The strict composition of the photographs directs the eye to the architecture and the design of the fifties. They give an impressive idea of the glitter and glory of the cinema in the teething years of the Federal Republic, which cast a completely different lights on the current debate about Cologne’s cinemascape. The exhibition accompanies the series of talks entitled “State of Cinema”, mounted by Filmforum NRW, which examines the importance of cinema in the present day. The exhibition has been made possible by loans from the Wim Cox Archive, Cologne, and the Sabine Schmidt Gallery, Cologne.
