Alfred Ehrhardt. Old-Frankfurt, 1943

"As a stranger deeply moved by the singular beauty of the city, Alfred Ehrhardt made his first proposal for the publication now at hand." - This is how Georg Hartmann put it in his preface to the book Alt Frankfurt, ein Vermächtnis (Old-Frankfurt, a Legacy) in 1950.
Commissioned by the Bund tätiger Altstadtfreunde Alfred Ehrhardt photographed the historic old town of Frankfurt just before the impending air raids in 1943. In some 400 images, he captured houses, churches, rooftops, alleys, squares, and also everyday street scenes. More than 100 of the photographs were included in the photo book, which was elaborately executed compared to the standards of the time. The book was completed by a considerable number of images by other important photographers from Frankfurt, for example Dr. Paul Wolff & Tritschler.
