1 septiembre 2007 – 11 noviembre 2007 Mark Wallingerhe London artist Mark Wallinger (b. 1959) belongs to the generation of British artists who in the 1990s caused a sensation in the art world, referred to as “Young British Art“. In contrast to colleagues such as Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas or Tracey Emin, Mark Wallinger’s artistic language is one of subtle irony, not of obvious provocation. His work does not deal with sexuality, violence and transitoriness so much as issues that are clearly political in nature.Wallinger’s artistic attitude combines social and political commitment with intellectualism and irony. He investigates the mechanisms of social symbols and identities - national, religious and social in its widest sense - and presents them in new artistic garb in a twisted and ironic manner. To do so, he examined in a series of works from the mid-1990s horseracing, a British sacred cow, by painting huge canvas portraits of profit-making thoroughbreds in the tradition of John Constable or combining depictions of jockey’s colourful racing outfits together with the name of the owner of the horse, or in photos of himself as Emily Davison - the suffragette, who in 1913 at the Epsom Derby tried to grasp hold of the bridle of King George V’s horse in order to confront him on women’s rights and then later died from the resulting injuries. The importance of horseracing, the dressing up of jockeys and the social role of women are combined in these works to create an absurd and revealing portrait of British society. direcciónKunstverein BraunschweigLessingplatz 12 38100 Braunschweig fon +49 531 495 56 http://Kunstverein-BS.de horariosTuesday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., closed on Monday.descripción del Museo |
