Neo Rauch: New roles. Pictures 1993 until today

Born in 1960 in Leipzig, Neo Rauch is widely acclaimed as the most important painter of his generation. He remains committed to the art of painting in an age when digital media seem to be gaining ground over the more classical forms of creative expression. While in the 1980s Rauch’s work was influenced by expressionism, his more recent paintings reveal a new realism. Rauch, who has clearly been shaped by the experience of growing up in the former East Germany, moves between socialist realism and Western abstraction from the second half of the 20th century, whereby his coloration and figuration directly allude to the socialist past.
This retrospective presentation of Rauch’s oeuvre at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg will include around 80 works from the period 1993-2006.
