Babylon. Myth and Truth

The Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East) in the Pergamon Museum will undergo a complete makeover for the Babylon exhibition. The permanent exhibition on art and culture of the ancient Near East is transformed into a Babylon museum. Even the famous Ishtar Gate and the Processional Way of Babylon will be shown in new robes. The aim of the re-organization is to do justice to the topic of ‘Babylon’. Over 800 objects, among them sculptures, reliefs, votive offerings, architectural fragments, and written documents, have been compiled for this venture. For the first time, the Babylonian treasures from specialized museums all around the world will be able to jointly tell the story of the 3000 years of the history of Babylon. Based on the latest findings of archaeological research, the exhibition introduces Babylonia in eight sections, including ‘Kingship’, ‘Architecture’, ‘Religion’, ‘Law’, ‘Economy and Everyday Life’, and ‘Science’.

The Pergamon Museum accommodates three separate museums: the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities), the Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East) and the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art).

The monumental reconstruction of archaeological building ensembles - such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate including the Processional Way of Babylon and the Mshatta Façade - has made the Pergamon Museum world-famous.
